Apple Crumble

The other day I had the pleasure of being invited to a flat in Barcelona for an evening meal with a lovely couple that my partner knows. It had been decided that they would make the starter and main and we would bring the dessert. But the question was, what should we make? After a little run through the possible choices - chocolate truffles, muffins, cookies, cakes - we plumped for crumble! It was a success (well at least that's what the said), and despite not being able to find bramley apples in Barcelona we managed to cobble together a forest fruit version, which tasted sumptuous. Yet our dining partners asked for the recipe, so here goes:

APPLE CRUMBLE

1 KG Apples (or any kind of fruit, but apples tend to be best used as the main fruit)
6 Oz/180g Plain Flour
3 Oz/90g Butter
2 oZ/60g Sugar (best to use an unrefined Caster Sugar)

Peel, core and slice the apples before softening them in a pan, adding a little water beforehand. Try adding a teaspoonful of cinnamon and/or a liquer of your choice. About 5-10 mins should do.
Crumble the flour and butter together until it resembles fine breadcrumbs and then stir in the sugar (the order is important).
Place apples in a dish, cover with the crumble mixture and voilĂ .
Bake for 30-40 mins at Gas Mark 6 (200c).
Serve with custard, creme or yoghurt.
